Many people are targeted online by people they know well. Understanding what to do and where and how to get help is crucial to minimizing the hurt and the risk.
Bullies have 70 ways at their disposal, from posing as their victims to get them into trouble, stealing their account or game points, locking them out of their own account, manipulating pictures or posting embarrassing pictures, to threats, to passing nasty rumors, to sharing secrets to hurt someone, to spying, surveillance and invasions of digital or real life privacy using technology. Cyberbullying can seem more extreme than any other form of bullying because it can seem inescapable. The bullying can occur inside the victims home. The attacks can be life threatening. The bully can be anonymous and uncontrollable.
Studies in the psycho social effects of cyberspace have begun to monitor the impacts cyberbullying may have on the victims, and the consequences it may lead to. Consequences of cyberbullying are multi-faceted, and affect online and offline behavior.
